Brief Biography

Joan Vertes is an occupational therapist who works in the sensory motor outpatient program in the Department of Rehabilitation. She also covers the epilepsy classroom at SickKids providing assessment and therapy to the children and consultation to the teachers and team.

Vertes is a graduate of McGill University. She teaches various labs at the University of Toronto School of Occupational Science (OS) and Occupational Therapy (OT), and supervises students at SickKids. Vertes also teaches in the community and has taught internationally. She has received two awards in 2012: the award for Sustained Outstanding Contribution to Occupational Therapy Education, and  a Community Partners Outstanding Sustained Teaching award, both from the University of Toronto School of OS and OT. Joan has been a member of the Continuing Education Committee of the University of Toronto School of OS and OT since it began five years ago. This committee is dedicated to providing community service. The OTs involved promote the visibility of occupational therapy while enhancing the playfulness of child care providers.

Research Interests

Vertes is involved in research (qualitative studies) on the role of groups in sensory motor therapy:

  • Through the looking glass: Group experiences of parents observing their children during sensory motor therapy.
  • Parents Perceptions of Small Group Sensory Motor Therapy.
