SickKids appoints Dr. Denis Daneman as Paediatrician-in-Chief

TORONTO - Denis Daneman, MB, BCh, FRCP(C) has been appointed the next Paediatrician-in-Chief at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and Chair, Department of Paediatrics at the University of Toronto (U of T) effective July 1, 2006.

Dr. Daneman is currently Head of the Division of Endocrinology at SickKids, a Senior Associate Scientist in the SickKids Research Institute, and a Professor of Paediatrics in the Faculty of Medicine at U of T. He also served as Associate Chief (Clinical Research) of the SickKids Research Institute from 2000-2005, and currently chairs the U of T Decanal Promotions Committee.

“Dr. Daneman is an exemplary leader in the field of paediatric endocrinology. His commitment to excellence in family-centred care, interdisciplinary education and evaluation, and his collaborative approach will serve us well,” says Mary Jo Haddad, president and CEO of SickKids. “He will bring exceptional leadership to the hospital's executive team and to the Department of Paediatrics.”

Dr. Daneman received his medical degree from the University of Witwatersrand , Johannesburg , South Africa followed by further training in paediatrics and paediatric endocrinology at SickKids and Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh .

“The Hospital for Sick Children and the University of Toronto have always been at the forefront of paediatric health care, teaching and research,” says Dr. Daneman. “I am thrilled to be part of this tradition and look forward to ongoing contributions of our institution to this field.”

Dr. Daneman's clinical activities are centred on comprehensive tertiary care of children and adolescents with diabetes, as well the care of children with endocrine disorders. His research focuses on factors affecting metabolic control and the early onset of complications in children and teens with Type1 diabetes.

His contributions to the fields of paediatrics and diabetes care have been recognized with many awards, including the Council Award from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario in 2003, the Gerald S. Wong Award from the Canadian Diabetes Association in 2000, and the Annual Award for Clinical Excellence in Paediatric Medical Care from the Department of Paediatrics, U of T and SickKids in 1998.

Dr. Daneman assumes the position of Paediatrician-in-Chief and Chair of the Department of Paediatrics from Dr. Hugh O'Brodovich, who is completing a 10-year term.
