SickKids doctors to receive Ontario’s highest honour

Two members of The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) will be appointed to the Order of Ontario at a special ceremony happening this afternoon at Queen’s Park. Dr. Helen Chan, Clinical Oncologist, Haematology/Oncology, and Dr. Kellie Leitch, Orthopaedic Surgeon, are among 29 people receiving the honour – Ontario’s highest. Joining them will be Paul Godfrey, Toronto businessman and civic leader and creator of the Herbie Fund.

Chan is internationally renowned for her breakthrough treatment of retinoblastoma, a rare eye cancer. Because of this research, more than 90 per cent of diagnosed children can be cured with chemotherapy.

Leitch was recognized for her work as a surgeon and as a national voice for children’s health in Canada. She has served as Chair of the Expert Panel for the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit, is Vice-President of CANFAR (Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research) and has been featured as one of Canada’s top 40 under 40.

Godfrey is well-known for creating the Herbie Fund, which pays for life-saving operations for children worldwide who would otherwise not have access to these services. To date, the fund has helped hundreds of children in over 87 countries.

These awards, which acknowledge excellence in any field of work, will be handed out by Lieutenant-Governor David Onley.
