SickKids and U of T accredit 706 paediatric nurses from Qatar

More than 700 paediatric nurses from Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) in Qatar have completed The Hospital for Sick Children’s (SickKids) Paediatric Nursing Education Program, which is accredited by the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing at University of Toronto.

The nurses’ achievement was celebrated on June 15 and16 at HMC where they received their certificates from representatives from the Faculty of Nursing and SickKids.
SickKids has worked with HMC since 2008 to support the transformation of health care services for children and families in Qatar.

HMC is the principal public health-care provider for the State of Qatar. The corporation manages eight hospitals as well as specialist clinical, educational and research facilities.

Nursing education is one of several projects in the partnership.

Pam Hubley, Chief of Professional Practice and Nursing at SickKids and Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Nursing, stated that the partnership has been a “wonderful experience.”

“We are delivering education of the highest calibre to nurses,” she said. “When nurses have very good knowledge, they can advocate for patients, and when they advocate for their patients they can improve the health outcomes of patients. Delivering an education program that is of the highest standard is essential to improving patient care.”

“The Faculty of Nursing was very pleased to provide accreditation for the Nursing Education program being delivered at HMC with SickKids,” said Leslie Vincent, Executive Director of the Centre for Professional Development at the Faculty of Nursing.

“It means that an academic facility has accredited the quality of the educational programs as meeting the very highest standard of nursing education to support the professional and continuing career development of nurses.”

Dr. Ann Marie Cannaby, Executive Director of Nursing at HMC said the accreditation shows patients that HMC’s paediatric nurses have met a quality standard. “It demonstrates both their knowledge and skills and is another example of our commitment to quality and accountability. I am very proud of the 706 nurses who have acquired their accreditation. I am confident that their hard work and dedication will continue to improve the health outcomes of their patients through the delivery of safe, effective and compassionate care.”
