The Hospital for Sick Children recognized for its stellar support for United Way

SickKids was one of more than 700 organizations in Toronto that ran an employee campaign in 2013 and among 90 organizations whose achievements were rewarded with a Spirit Award nomination.

SickKids also received United Way’s 2013 Exemplary Award, which is presented to the top 15 per cent of all workplaces. “This is an amazing achievement that should be shared with all who volunteered, since it was their personal efforts that enable SickKids to achieve this ‘top in class’ status,” said Gordon Shand, Resource Development Manager with United Way Toronto.

SickKids’ goal for the 2013 campaign was $100,000; through payroll and credit card donations and participation in various events, staff raised $101,257.70. That was up from the 2012 campaign which raised $92,500. A record was set in 2011 when SickKids raised $133,600.

Susan O’Dowd, Vice-president, Human Resources, was chair of the 2013 campaign, assisted by co-chairs Karima Karmali, Director, Centre for Innovation and Excellence in Child and Family-Centred Care, and Lisa Schmidt, Director, Organizational Development.

In recognition of Spirit Award nominees, United Way has created a special logo that has been posted on www.sickkkids.ca and may be used on other digital and print products from SickKids.

United Way celebrated the volunteers and donors of its 2013 campaign on Jan. 29. The campaign raised $117 million which supports a network of about 200 community agencies that offer programs and services to help people build a better life. Investments will also be made in support of United Way’s long-term efforts to strengthen neighbourhoods.
