SickKids wins top workplace award

quality healthcare workplace

SickKids has received the highest level Quality Healthcare Workplace Award. The award was announced on Nov. 4 at the annual HealthAchieve conference of the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA).

This is the third year in a row that SickKids has won the award.

Built on a progressive-improvement framework with bronze, silver, gold and platinum-level awards, the award is designed to encourage self-evaluation, learning and improvement. It was created as a result of a partnership of the Ontario Hospital Association and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care – HealthForceOntario.

The judges look for organizational efforts to improve health-care workplaces in ways that contribute to providers’ quality of work life and the quality of the care and services they deliver.

The SickKids entry described, among other things, how the senior leadership team demonstrates an ongoing commitment to improving staff well-being through such initiatives as:

  • Organizational strategy advancing a healthy and safe organization;
  • Staff Wellness Centre with fitness studio, cardio/weight equipment, showers, change rooms;
  • Workforce relations, diversity, conflict resolution and employee assistance programs;
  • Code of conduct, respect in the workplace, prevention of workplace violence and harassment policies;
  • Bi-annual employee engagement survey;
  • Staff continuing professional development funding;
  • Service excellence, daily continuous improvement and leadership development programs; and
  • Competitive benefits package providing comprehensive levels of coverage including psychological treatment.
