Dr. Upton Allen appointed to Order of Ontario

Dr. Upton Allen, Head of Infectious Diseases, Senior Associate Scientist, Child Health Evaluative Sciences, and Co-chair of the SickKids-Caribbean Initiative at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) was recently awarded the highest honour in the province, the Order of Ontario.

The Order of Ontario recognizes individuals whose exceptional achievement in their field have left a lasting legacy in the province, in Canada and beyond. Allen was one of 23 new appointments announced this week.

Allen is an internationally recognized paediatrician whose multidisciplinary approach to preventing life-threatening infections among children with compromised immune systems has had profound national and global impacts.

His research is focused on infections in transplant patients. Among these infections, the primary focus is on herpes group viral infections, notably Epstein-Barr Virus-related post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease. Allen also investigates vaccine and vaccination strategies for children with weakened immune systems. He is also a Professor in Paediatrics and Health Policy Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto.

The Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, will bestow the honour to the newest appointees during a ceremony at Queen's Park on February 27. Learn more about the Order of Ontario.
