Application Process

Eligibility

The ideal CALIPER volunteer will demonstrate some combination of the following skills and education:

  • Completion of OSSD or grade 12 equivalent
  • Some post-secondary education desirable
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Experience working with children and families and/or working in a laboratory setting
  • Reliability and ability to maintain regular shift attendance
  • Commitment to ongoing learning and development
  • Ability to work well individually and in a team setting
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills; non-judgmental and able to initiate conversation
  • Approachable, tactful, and sensitive to the needs of participants
  • Ability to handle stressful situations and console participants (i.e. during blood donation)
  • Ability to explain and discuss the project with the general public and professional community

Time Commitment

Office shifts are typically scheduled in four-hour timeslots from 9-12 or 1-4, Monday through Friday, on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. We ask for a minimum time commitment of three months. Also, since clinic days are vital to the functioning of the project, we request that volunteers attend at least one clinic per month.

Application Process

  • Submit a resume to Karin Trajcevski (karin.trajcevski@sickkids.ca)
  • Selected candidates will be invited for an interview and successful applicants will then be connected with the Volunteer Resources Department at SickKids.
  • Volunteer Resources will ensure that each candidate meets the following requirements to volunteer at SickKids:
    • Two references
    • Immunization (Two-step Tuberculosis, MMR, Hepatitis B)
    • Police Record Check with Vulnerability Sector Search
    • Hospital Orientation
  • Once the volunteer successfully fulfills these requirements, Volunteer Resources will be in touch to confirm that the volunteer has cleared and is granted permission to start with the team
  • The coordinator will arrange for the volunteer to attend a CALIPER-specific Orientation and subsequent Job Shadowing.
