Cardiac critical care

SickKids established the first Division of Cardiac Critical Care Medicine in Canada in early 2006. The Division is part of the Department of Critical Care Medicine at The Hospital for Sick Children, and an integral part of the Labatt Family Heart Centre.

We are dedicated to the development of cardiac focused expertise in clinical, teaching and research programs.

The Cardiac Critical Care Unit is an 18 bed comprehensive critical care unit for infants and children with cardiac disease.

Research

The members of the Division of Cardiac Critical Care Medicine are actively involved in multiple and diverse areas of research, both individually and in collaboration with colleagues in Paediatric Critical Care Medicine, the Labatt Family Heart Centre and via national and international partnerships.

Key areas of academic work include use of Big Data to generate short- and long-term predictive analytic models, the role of nutrition in post-operative care and outcomes, quality and safety in pediatric cardiac critical care, and bioethics.  Via the Labatt Family Heart Centre we are a core site in the NIH/NHLBI sponsored Pediatric Heart Network and we are active participants in the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Consortium (PC4).
