Flexible start/finish work hours
Our nursing staff provide patient care 24 hours per day and seven days per week. In order to ensure adequate staffing levels while providing flexible arrangements for our staff, we have a system of self-scheduling for all front-line nursing staff. Staff schedule themselves over six week periods, which, for 1.0 FTE staff requires that they schedule themselves for 20 – 11.25 hour shifts over a six-week period. Our staff sees this benefit as supportive of their personal and family lives.
Telecommuting/work from home
SickKids does provide dial-up connections to our intranet for employees who are eligible by job design to telecommute. Some employees use this option as much as one day per week.
Reduced summer hours options
Administrative staff in many departments adopt a summer schedule between May and August. This initiative allows employees to work an additional ½ hour each day and having every third Friday off.
