An observer is an individual who has requested a period of time at SickKids in order to gain experience. This individual is usually a graduate of an international medical school who is not licensed for practice in Canada. Physicians wishing to gain observer status must apply directly to the department/division they wish to observe. Final approval is granted by the department head and the Medical Advisory Committee if the applicant meets the necessary requirements.
The department head may permit the presence of observers in his or her department for a period not in excess of twelve (12) weeks. A non-refundable observer application fee of $100 is applicable to observers (term > 2 days). The Medical Advisory Committee must approve any extension beyond this period. Observers shall not have any patient care responsibilities and shall not begin a term without prior notice to the Medical Affairs Office or approval by the MAC, as appropriate.
Observers will not participate in any direct patient contact and therefore, do not require an Independent or Educational license from the CPSO. Observers are not required to have passed the Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Examination, or the TOEFL and TSE examinations. For more information, please review the College of Physicians and Surgeons Policy #2-04 on Shadowing.
Your first step in applying for an observership is to contact the department you are interested in observing in. To find out about the different departments, visit the SickKids Directory or learn more about International Education opportunities.
