Learning Through Play International Project

Miriam Reesor, Learning Through Play International Project Manager, The Hincks-Dellcrest Centre
Alfredo Tinajero, Program Evaluation Services, The Hincks-Dellcrest Centre

Hincks-Dellcrest is a mental health service for infants, children, youth and their families. The Learning Through Play (LTP) International Project is currently in its third, three- year Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) funded project. The purpose of the LTP International project is to improve the health and well being of young children (m/f) by educating mothers and fathers on the development of healthy children (birth to age 6), including all aspects of child development (cognitive, linguistic, socio-emotional, and physical). The Learning Through Play calendars, birth to three and three to six, along with a LTP Trainers Manual and a LTP Parent Group Leaders Guide are the core resources used in this project. The project is implemented through local agency partners that are already working with families and children. The LTP project allows these agencies to enhance the parenting and early child development component of their services. The current LTP-CIDA (2008-2011) project has local agency partners in India, Pakistan, Philippines, Uganda, Kenya, El Salvador, Peru and Jamaica. The presentation will focus on the LTP project approach, resources, lessons learned and outcomes.

Learning Objectives:
1. To introduce the Learning Through Play International Project including its methodology and resources.
2. To look at lessons learned over the past ten years of LTP involvement in International child development.
3. To share an analysis of the themes that are emerging as to the impact of the project on parents and children.

Please note:  Infant Mental Health Rounds will NOT be held during the months of July, August, September or January.
