Atkinson - Certificate in Infant Mental Health

Background and Purpose
Recent research has found that experiences in a child's first three years significantly influence ability to learn, cope and establish satisfying relationships throughout life. Research has also identified factors that put infants "at risk", and demonstrated the effectiveness of prevention and early intervention with infants and their parents.

This 120-hour non-degree credit Certificate is directed to front-line service providers, who wish to acquire essential knowledge and practical skills to work effectively with infants and their families.

Who Should Attend
Our Certificate Program is designed for a broad range of front-line service providers working in a variety of community-based and institutional settings including: child care workers, child protection workers, early childhood educators, family physicians, infant development workers, lay home visitors, occupational therapists, paediatricians, physiotherapists, psychologists, public health nurses, social workers, and speech and language pathologists.

Admission Requirements
Certificate Program candidates must have: 

1.    a degree or diploma in a human or social service, allied health or early childhood
       education discipline; AND
2.    a minimum of two years full-time relevant practice experience related to infant 
       development or early intervention with infants, children and their parents; AND
3.    current employment in a related position; OR
4.    For those who meet admission requirements 2 and 3, but not requirement 1, 
       permission of the Program and Logistics Manager will be required.

Acceptance into the Program is subject to the candidate being in good financial standing with York University.

Program Structure and Course Content
The Certificate program consists of eight courses that include theoretical concepts, current research, experiential exercises, video vignettes, peer consultation and role-playing. Participants will develop intervention skills to encourage positive parent-child interactions and promote optimal development in infants.

Course #1: Context of Development and Intervention: Influence of Parents, Family, Community, Culture and Other Factors      
Course #2: Child Contributions to Development
Course #3: The Parent/Child Relationship and Parenting
Course #4: Infant and Toddler Development
Course #5: High-Risk Parenting
Course #6: Assessment of Child, Parent, Interaction and Context
Course #7: Prevention and Early Intervention Strategies
Course #8: Practitioner Self Awareness and Professional Development

All have both academic qualifications and active clinical experience with infants and their families

Tuition Fees, Full Certificate:

  • Full payment: $1,930 (GST exempt)
  • or 2 equal installments of $965 (GST Exempt) plus an installment fee of $125

NEW - Certificate in Infant Mental Health - COURSE SERIES

Beginning in Winter 2009 students have the option to register on a course by course SERIES basis. Each participant will be awarded a Recognition of Professional Development from York University.  Courses 1 and 2 will be offered together in the Winter and/or Summer of 2009 as first in the series.  These courses can then be applied to the full Certificate in Infant Mental Health.

Value Added:

Develop comprehensive skills and knowledge and apply these two courses to the full Infant Mental Health Certification.

Tuition for Infant Mental Health Certification - Series 1 (courses 1 & 2):  $ 482.50 (GST exempt)

Dates:  WINTER - March 6, 7, & 8, 2009  (Friday-Sunday) 9am-4pm
SUMMER - May 1, 2 & 3, 2009   (Friday-Sunday) 9am-4pm
