International Patient Program

Who we are

As the first point of contact for international inquiries and referrals to SickKids, the International Patient Program (IPP) assists with over 1,000 inquiries and facilitates over 100 new patient referrals each year.

Our team is comprised of dedicated roles to support international patients at SickKids.

Program Coordinator
The program coordinator responds to inquiries regarding the IPP referral process from patients and families, referring providers, insurance companies and government or embassy representatives. In conjunction with members of the team, the program coordinator facilitates communication with patients and families as well as referring providers regarding referral status and ongoing progress. The program coordinator communicates the outcome of referral review, and if accepted for care at SickKids, will send the cost estimate, monitor financial arrangements, schedule appointments, and discuss travel requirements to enter Canada. The program coordinator supports our goal is to ensure a smooth and positive experience for the patient and family.

International Case Coordinator
An International Case Coordinator case navigator is dedicated to each international patient and family at SickKids. The International Case Coordinator has a clinical background and leads the referral review, supports the medical treatment plan development, and works closely with clinical programs to support the plan of care. The International Case Coordinator continuously supports individual family needs throughout their stay at SickKids, and communicates with the health care provider abroad to ensure safe and appropriate transition upon return to the home country. The International Case Coordinator organizes the transition from hospital to community during the patient and families’ stay in Canada and supports discharge planning to the home country to ensure a seamless process of patient care delivery. The International Case Coordinator is the key contact person for the patient/family, health care provider abroad, and SickKids clinical teams who assists with all aspects of the international patient/family journey, including follow up care, and any unplanned necessary care that may be required at SickKids.

Senior Manager
The senior manager supports the overall team functions regarding all aspects of service for international patients and families. In recognition of the unique needs of international patients and families, the senior manager works closely with the medical and hospital leadership to deliver high quality care and a positive patient and family experience. An important focus is ongoing evaluation of client satisfaction, including feedback from patients, families, and internal and external providers. The senior manager supports the teams with the review and management of complex cases and ensures that the entire system functions with a focus on always doing what is best for the patient and family.

Surgical Director
The surgical director works closely with the senior manager to support high quality service delivery for international patients and families. In particular, the surgical director supports the review of complex medical and surgical cases and assists in directing new referrals to the appropriate medical team. The surgical director assists physician partners abroad by providing expert advice to ensure a smooth transition during the intake and repatriation of the patient back to their home country.

Medical Director
The medical director works closely with the senior manager to achieve high quality service delivery for international patients and families. In particular, the medical director supports the review of complex medical cases and assists in directing new referrals to the appropriate medical team, specifically admissions requiring intensive care. As a key player in acute care transport, the medical director assists physician partners abroad with medical transport issues and by providing expert advice to ensure a smooth transition during the intake and repatriation of the patient back to their home country.

Director
The director provides oversight to the International Patient Program and manages executive level partnerships across SickKids. The director works closely with the senior manager to lead the direction of strategic priorities and ensure that the entire system functions with a focus on always doing what is best for the patient and family.
