International Patient Program

For Healthcare Professionals

Through the International Patient Program, SickKids accepts children from around the world who have complex medical and surgical conditions, and who are unable to access the required medical/surgical treatment in their home country or region, or who require subspecialty tertiary or a quaternary level available only at SickKids.

We provide three specific service offerings for our international patients and families:

  1. Medical/Surgical Treatment
  2. Medical Second Opinion (including Radiology Review)
  3. Telehealth Consultation

Medical and Surgical Treatment

SickKids accepts children from a wide range of complex medical and surgical treatment, based on the following criteria:

  • The child is under the age of 17 years, and will complete all medical treatment by their 18th birthday;
  • The child has complex (tertiary or quaternary level) care/treatment needs;
  • The required specialized treatment is not available in the child's home country or region;
  • Emergency or urgent treatment is not required;
  • There is capacity within the requested SickKids clinical program to accept an international patient, without negatively impacting access to the program for children from Ontario and Canada;
  • There are available services in the home country to provide follow-up care upon completion of the requested treatment at SickKids.

Medical Second Opinion (including Radiology Review)

Through the International Patient Program, SickKids is able to offer Medical Second Opinion services to support international physicians in validating diagnostic findings, pathology or radiologic studies outcomes, and/or advising on treatment options and plans based on diagnostic findings.

The International Patient Program office facilitates the receipt of all medical information required for a Medical Second Opinion, and will forward the file to the appropriate SickKids' medical experts who will review the information and provide feedback in a written report. A minimum fee of US $500 will be levied for time spent on the review of the requested medical information and completion of the written report. The final fee amount will be communicated to the requesting party upon completion of the Medical Second Opinion.

The Medical Second Opinion service can also be provided via video-conferencing, which allows for direct face-to-face discussion between the SickKids expert(s) and the requesting medical team. If a videoconference discussion is requested, an additional fee will be charged to reflect both SickKids' physician time and connection fees associated with videoconferencing.

Please note the following:

If you are requesting a Medical Second Opinion on any radiologic studies, copies of the radiology studies to be reviewed must be sent to SickKids, either electronically as a DiCom file or as a CD.

If you are requesting a Medical Second Opinion on any pathology studies, all original pathology slides and reports, together with a representative block or 10 unstained slides from a representative block, must be sent to SickKids. All original material will be returned upon completion of the Medical Second Opinion review.

Telehealth Consultation

SickKids is able to offer medical and surgical consultations via videoconferencing, which allows for direct face-to-face discussion in 'real-time' between SickKids clinical experts and the requesting medical team in a patient's home country. This consultation may include review and consultation on cases that are complex, rare or have failed a first course of treatment.

These videoconference discussions can include:

  • Medical/surgical consultation;
  • Pre-screening patients prior to their travel to SickKids for treatment;
  • 'Virtual' follow-up clinic appointments after treatment at SickKids;
  • Tele-radiology review.

At times, and where appropriate, the telehealth consultation may also include the patient and his/her family.
