Fetal Cardiac Program
The Fetal Cardiac Program at The Hospital for Sick Children is made up of a multidisciplinary team that provides detailed evaluation, counselling and treatment for heart problems that may occur during pregnancy. We work closely with community obstetricians, geneticists, family doctors, mid-wives, and the high risk obstetric services provided at Tertiary Referral Centres throughout Ontario. Heart problems in the developing baby may result from abnormal development of the heart (congenital heart disease), heart rhythm disturbances, genetic conditions and health problems and conditions in the mother that may affect the baby, including illness, medication and other exposures.
The goals of the Fetal Cardiac Program are to ensure that families receive the highest quality care for potential heart problems during pregnancy, further improve the detection rate of cardiac anomalies thereby raising the standards of cardiac imaging during pregnancy.
In addition to our clinical service, ongoing educational support is provided to cardiac and obstetric programs across Canada.
The Fetal Outreach Program provides on-site training and education for diagnostic ultrasound laboratories evaluating women during pregnancy. This training is provided by a specialized member of our team.
