Electrophysiology

Cardiac electrophysiology is the study of how electric phenomena make the heart function. The clinical practice of cardiac electrophysiology in children consists of evaluation and treating abnormally fast or slow heart rhythms, and preventing cardiac sudden death. The heart rhythm can be recorded in different ways and situations, and treated with medications, devices (pacemakers or defibrillators) or procedures (in the catheterization laboratory or operating room) if necessary. The electrophysiology service at The Hospital for Sick Children uses state-of-the-art equipment and expertise to provide clinical care, academic training and research programs in the care of children with heart rhythm disorders.
