Daisy Award
About the DAISY Foundation
DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The Foundation was established in 2000 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died at age 33 of complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). During Pat’s eight week hospitalization his family was awestruck by the care and compassion his nurses provided not only to Pat but to everyone in his family. So one of the goals they set in creating a Foundation in Pat’s memory was to recognize extraordinary nurses everywhere who make an enormous difference in the lives of so many people by the super-human work they do everyday.

The DAISY Award
The DAISY Award is a program that rewards and celebrates the extraordinary clinical skill and compassionate care given by nurses everyday. SickKids is proud to be a DAISY Award Hospital Partner, recognizing one of our nurses with this special honour every month.
Each month, award recipients are chosen by their nurse administrators, peers, physicians, patients and families. Since every nurse who receives The DAISY Award reminds us that their entire team is very deserving of recognition and that it takes a team to provide great patient care, all the staff in the recipient's unit/area are treated to Cinnabon cinnamon rolls at every presentation.
Gifts each DAISY Award Honoree Receives
Each DAISY Award Honoree will be recognized at a public ceremony in their area/unit and will receive:
- Certificate
- DAISY Award Pin
- Hand-carved stone sculpture entitled A Healer’s Touch
