Practicum Placements for Psychology Graduate Students

Procedures and requirements for M.A. and Ph.D. students interested in a practicum placement in the Department of Psychology at the Hospital for Sick Children.

Criteria for application:

  1. Students must have completed a prior practicum placement (M.A. or Ph.D.).
  2. Students must have completed a graduate course in child or adult assessment and/or intervention.
  3. Students must have completed graduate level courses in child psychopathology, child development, or learning disabilities.
  4. Completion of a course in ethics is preferred.

Deadlines for application:

** For fall or summer placements, applications must be submitted by February 1 in each calendar year **

Procedure:

Students are welcome to submit a CV and a letter describing their placement interests and requirements by the specified dates. Include required number of hours, number of days per week available and proposed duration of placement. References are not required but they may be included. Application letters and CVs should be sent by email. Any additional information can be emailed or sent by mail. No applications will be considered if received after the stated deadlines. Students will receive a letter to confirm receipt of their application. The students’ information will be reviewed by staff available to offer placements and will be contacted if an interview is going to be scheduled. Notification of placement offers will be made by March 1 in each year.

Practicum students will usually work with and under the supervision of one Psychologist in one specific program. Occasionally a student will be offered a placement where their time is shared between two staff Psychologists. Please see the Department website for detailed descriptions of programs serviced by the Psychology Department.  Please indicate in your letter if you have specific program preferences. Depending on the program, students will participate in assessments, consultation and or intervention. Students will have the opportunity to attend interdisciplinary rounds, case conferences and professional development offered within a specific program and within the larger Psychology Department. This includes monthly Psychology Rounds, Psychology Education Day and didactic seminars offered in the Psychology Department.

We continue to have only limited positions available and the number of placements offered may vary each year. The training opportunities in the department focus on doctoral internships and post-doctoral fellowships.
