Research by the numbers
The 1970s was a decade of change and maturation for SickKids Research Institute. A true test of that growth is to compare some of the staff numbers from the 70s to the numbers from previous decades.
In the 1950s, the research institute was just getting started. In its third year of operation, 1957, RI operated at a cost of about $500,000 and did not have any scientists that were not clinicians at SickKids.
In the 60s, the Research Institute was expanding and moving into new areas of space and of research. In 1967, SickKids RI, with full-time scientists as well as clinician scientists, operated at a cost of $1.5 million.
By the 1970s the RI continued to expand, adding new programs and personnel. And through the research and the caliber of our personnel, the Institute was gaining international recognition. In 1977, the RI annual operating budget reached $7.5 million and the number of full-time scientists had more than doubled since the 60s.
