Surgical precision brings early excellence

Early SickKids Research Institute annual reports illustrate the creativity and innovation of our first researchers as they built and expanded the institute. The 1959 Director’s Report recommended that more resources be allocated to develop our expertise in surgical research. These early decisions helped lay the groundwork for the world-renowned organization that is today’s SickKids.

Some of those decisions had immediate impact: in the 1960 annual report, Research Institute Director R.R. Struthers referred back to his 1959 recommendation and gleefully reported the progress that had been made as a result of that investment. He punctuated that impact with the news that Dr. Robert Salter had been awarded the 1960 Medal in Surgery of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Speaking of early success, this was actually the third Royal College Medal to be received by a SickKids researcher. Dr. Donald Fraser received a Medal in Medicine in 1956 and Dr. Richard Rowe received a Medal in Medicine in 1957.
