Healthy activity

Being active is very important, particularly for children. Health Canada recommends that children five to 14 years old be active for 90 minutes per day (60 minutes of moderate activity plus 30 minutes of vigorous activity). In general, younger children are more active than older children and often boys are more active than girls. Many children who have had treatments for their heart problems are active for less than 60 minutes per day.

Canada's Physical Activity Guide for Children recommends:

  • Inactive children increase the amount of time they currently spend being physically active by 30 minutes per day
  • Inactive children decrease the amount of time they spend on TV, video games and the computer by at least 30 minutes per day
  • All children should aim to achieve less than 2 hours of screen time per day
  • All children should aim to achieve 90 minutes of moderate or vigorous physical activity each day
  • Increasing physical activity gradually over time
  • Being active for at least five to 10 minutes at a time
