Welcome to Ito Lab

Dr. Shinya Ito is a staff physician in the Division of Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), University of Toronto, and a senior scientist at the SickKids Research Institute. Dr. Ito leads the pharmacogenetics program and directs the Adverse Drug Reaction Clinic at SickKids.

The Ito Lab has both clinical and basic science focus. The main theme of the lab research is drug safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as well as drug transport and kinetics in human milk. However, multiple studies are being conducted to cover the following topics:

    • Neurocognitive adverse drug reactions and Quality of Life in childhood leukemia survivors (Phenome, Genome, Epigenome, and Nutriome)
    • Pharmacokinetic Modeling: i.e., population pharmacokinetics (popPK) and physiologically-based pharmacokinetics (PBPK)
    • Pharmacogenetics: identification of genetic variants related to serious adverse drug reactions in children, and feasibility of implementing pharmacogenetic testing service into routine paediatric care in future

The ultimate goal of research in Ito lab is to advance knowledge base for improving efficacy and safety of drug therapy in children, especially in breastfed infants.
