Activity

Get active to look and feel your best!

Maximize your health benefits by teaming good nutrition choices with daily physical activity.

A healthy diet will lower your overall energy intake, and physical activity will further reduce calories and the amount of energy that will be stored as body fat.  But the advantages of daily activity go much further than just helping achieve and maintain a healthy body weight. Physical activity is just as good for your body on the inside as the outside!

More than just looking good!

Regular physical activity helps develop cardiovascular fitness and lowers your risk for developing high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes. It also reduces your chances of developing chronic diseases in adulthood. While you’re moving you’re also developing and strengthening your heart, lungs and muscles, and boosting your body systems and functions. (You will be improving your immune, digestive, muscular and circulatory systems to name a few!) Activity will also make you feel good. Exercise has been proven to reduce anxiety, stress and depression and to boost your self esteem and confidence. Being active also increases your energy, helping you feel alert and energized. It improves your concentration, and helps you sleep better too.

Now those are a lot of reasons to get moving!

How much activity do you need?

According to Canada’s physical activity guide, kids and teens need 90 minutes of physical activity every day. That may seem like a lot, but it’s easy enough to do! Take 10 minutes of activity here and there throughout your day, and you will soon reach the 90 minute goal. Remember, activity doesn’t have to be scheduled to count, so take advantage of any opportunity to be active. Take the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator. Walk to where you have to go instead of driving or taking the bus - or get off the bus one stop earlier. Stand instead of sitting. Leave time during lunch or recess to stretch. Walk around while talking on the phone. Get off the couch during TV commercials, or switch off the computer and do some quick exercises. Or, better yet, go outside and play. The more you do, the better you’ll feel!

Activity as a habit!

Prefer walking to running? Rather skate than bike? Love gymnastics but can’t find the time to swim? Not into sports, but love to dance? It doesn’t matter what activity you choose, only that you pick something you enjoy doing!  You’re more likely to stick with it and will benefit from the long term rewards of being active. Not everyone likes the same thing or has the same abilities. But it’s what YOU enjoy that counts. You may have to try a few different activities before you find what you really like. But make activity a habit, and you will soon see that exercise is good for your body, inside and out. And it gives you a whole new outlook on life, too!  test
