Simple Bone Cyst in Kids

Trial Treatments

Patients who participate in this trial will receive one of the following simple bone cyst treatments:

1. Curettage with puncture

A small surgical instrument (curette) will be inserted to scrape and puncture the cyst wall and the nearby bone marrow cavity.

2. Curettage with puncture and Vitoss injection

A small surgical instrument (curette) will be inserted to scrape and puncture the cyst wall and the nearby bone marrow cavity; then a predetermined amount of Vitoss morsels will be injected into the cavity. Vitoss is a tri-calcium phosphate bone graft substitute, which acts as a scaffold to encourage new bone growth.

Repeat Treatment

In some subjects, the cyst may not be completely eliminated after a single treatment. The surgeon will determine if a second treatment is needed. Each trial treatment can be repeated once in the same subject at least three months after the first one.

After Treatment

Subjects are usually allowed to go home the same day of the treatment. Doctors may ask subjects to temporarily minimize physical activity to prevent additional fractures and allow time for the bone to heal.
