Trainee Start-Up Fund
Overview
The Trainee Start-Up Fund (TSUF) provides funding aimed at encouraging and supporting trainees to pursue their interests in:
A) Conducting research based on their own ideas, independent from their primary thesis/degree based work
B) Travelling to another lab to learn a new research technique not available within the Greater Toronto Area
Annual value: Up to $3,000 CAD. No funds will be issued at the time of award notice. Successful applicants must submit invoices or receipts in order to be reimbursed.
Award status: Active
Deadline: February 1 and August 1 annually (if either date falls on a weekend/holiday, the deadline will be set for the next closest business day)
Eligibility
1. At the time of application and award notice, applicants must be training at SickKids as one of the following:
- Graduate student
- Research fellow
- Clinical fellow in a paediatric clinical program (e.g. medicine and surgery)
- Resident in a paediatric clinical program (e.g. medicine and surgery)
- Trainee in a paediatric health profession (e.g. nursing, social work, physiotherapy, pharmacy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, etc.)
2. Applicants must be conducting research relevant to child health. The specific relevance of the proposed research must be clearly indicated on the application cover page.
3. At the time of application, the applicant’s supervisor must be a SickKids staff member appointed to the Research Institute as one of the following:
- Senior Scientist
- Senior Associate Scientist
- Scientist
- Associate Scientist
- Project Investigator
Citizenship: Canadian; Permanent Resident; International; Non-Permanent Resident
Degree Level: M.Sc.; PhD; Trainees in paediatric health professions (i.e. nursing, social work, physiotherapy, pharmacy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, etc); Residents and fellows in all paediatric clinical programs (i.e. medicine and surgery)
Applicant Status: Incoming Students; Continuing Students
Evaluation Criteria
Evaluation criteria are included in the Trainee Start up Fund application package.
Application Procedures
1. Applicants must submit an electronic copy of their application including a signed copy of the application cover page, in PDF format, to Shiv Kamal, Senior Secretary, Research Training Centre.
2. Applications are reviewed and evaluated by the TSUF Committee.
3. Applicants are notified of whether their application has been approved for funding approximately two months following the deadline.
