Clinical Research Centre (CRC)

The CRC consists of the Cardiopulmonary Exercise Laboratory and the Clinical Investigation Unit (CIU). The CRC is led by Dr. Martin Post, Scientific Director, and operated by the Physiology & Experimental Medicine program, at the Research Institute. Dr. Felix Ratjen is the Medical Director.

The CRC’s services are accessible to any SickKids principal investigator on a cost-recovery basis. The CRC facility, staff, and equipment are available seven days per week, 24 hours per day, with prior arrangement. Study participants may include subjects of all ages, from newborns through to adults. Healthy volunteers as well as SickKids patients can be accommodated. Non-SickKids users may also access the CRC, with prior arrangement.

Studies conducted at the CRC must be approved by the Management Committee and the SickKids Research Ethics Board. Cost estimates can be provided within one week.

To access these resources, the CRC must be provided with:

  • A copy of the final REB-approved research protocol, details of the actual tests and procedures that will be done by CRC staff
  • A copy of the REB approval letter
  • Copies of the signed consent/assent forms for each patient
  • Copies of any amendments to the Informed Consent forms and/or protocol during the study
