Science Extravaganza 2008

We hope the students who attended the May 2008 Science Extravaganza at SickKids had an amazing time. The two day event had the students creating incredibly strong paper stools, solving a very tangled problem, discussing scientific professions, participating in important science research projects (i.e. sawing shells, breaking bones, manipulating liquids with pipettes, analyzing microscope work, and more). The two-day event was capped off with an amazing tour through the Ontario Science Centre.

This year we had almost twice as many students as last year, with almost 150 students ranging in age from 12 to 18 years and from 10 different groups participating. From the Toronto District School Board we welcomed:

  • Bloor Collegiate Institute;
  • George Vanier Secondary School;
  • Jarvis Collegiate Institute;
  • Thistletown Collegiate Institute; and
  • Victoria Park Collegiate Institute.

From the District Board Ontario North East we hosted Timiskaming District Secondary School and Englehart High School. Also joining us for the Science Extravaganza was Visions of Science, the Linden School and as always, our patients from SickKids.

This elite group of students had the opportunity to ask globally renowned scientists questions about their cutting edge research, and learn about what they're doing to improve healthcare. All in all, it is a great opportunity to see firsthand why science is one of the best jobs around.
