Research Activities
MR velocity mapping by using phase-contrast technique for blood flow velocity is advantagenous over the ultrasound Doppler technique in two respects. Firstly, the measurement is not influenced by presence of air, bone or surgical scar. Therefore, any vessel in any anatomical location and orientation can be approached without difficulty. Secondly, as MR measures blood flow velocity from the whole cross-sectional area of the vessel, it enables accurate calculation of blood flow through the vessel of interest.
This provides us with tremendous opportunity to evaluate the blood flow within the lungs, which has not been investigated in detail.
By using this phase-contrast imaging, we are now doing research on;
- Evaluation of normal blood flow pattern in pulmonary circulation
- Evaluation of pulmonary regurgitation after surgical repair of tetralogy of Fallot and truncus arteriosus
- Pulmonary arterial blood flow changes in patients with pulmonary vein obstruction
- Real-time MR Doppler utilization in blood flow mapping
- Phase-contrast MR quantification of differential pulmonary blood flow; correlation with radioisotope perfusion scan
