Centre for Orthotics and Medical Devices

At The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), The Centre for Orthotics & Medical Devices is comprised of: Certified Orthotists, Registered Orthotic Technicians and Orthotic Technicians.

A description of their roles follows:

A Certified Orthotist [designation C.O.(C)] is specifically trained and educated to provide or manage the provision of a custom-designed, fabricated, modified and fitted external orthosis to a child. This is based on a clinical assessment and physician's prescription when provided, with the goal of restoring physiological function and/or cosmesis

A Registered Orthotic Technician [designation R.T.O.(C)] applies to an individual that has completed an accredited technical program and who has successfully completed the Canadian Board of Certification of Prosthetists and Orthotics (CBCPO) technical registration exam.

An Orthotic Technician is an individual who has completed an accredited technical program. This individual works under the direct supervision of a Certified Orthotist and is responsible for the manufacture and assembly of orthotic appliances being dispensed. This individual has the option of training for 22 months and then writing the CBCPO technical registration exam. After successfully completing this exam, this individual is then able to work more independently of the Certified Orthotist.

At various times, the division may accommodate orthotic interns.

An Orthotic Intern is an individual who has completed an accredited clinical program or the accepted equivalent [i.e., foreign trained certifee] and has been accepted and entered in the internship program. This individual works under the direct supervision of a Certified Orthotist for a period of 22 months. Upon completion of this term, the individual is eligible to write the CBCPO Certification Exam.
