G20 Summit information for families
UPDATE SUNDAY JUNE 27: SickKids lockdown has been lifted. Now in normal weekend access mode. Protests continue to take place in the city. Please use caution when travelling to SickKids.
The G20 Summit is now underway. Security zones, moving protests throughout the downtown core and police activity are having an impact on vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Plan for some extra travel time to and from SickKids during the weekend and be vigilant for protests in the area, including on University Avenue and Queen's Park.
Take extra care travelling to and from SickKids. Protests can turn ugly in a second and you can quickly find yourself in the middle of a violent situation. If you encounter a threatening situation or feel unsafe while coming to SickKids, take another route or find safe shelter in a local shop until things have calmed down and you feel safe. Please follow instructions from police if you run into a protest or a roadblock. Protests will be ongoing and can take to the streets at any time, with little warning. We encourage you to take all reasonable safety precautions. Monitor media reports of protest activity and use common sense. If you will be at SickKids this weekend, we strongly advise you not to go out to watch the protests.
Families and visitors to SickKids will notice an increased police presence in the city, including in the area around SickKids. Within SickKids, our Protection Services (Security) team is also more visible this weekend, ensuring the safety of patients, families and staff at the Hospital this weekend.
For families and visitors anxious about travelling alone to the subway or the Atrium parking garage, SickKids' Protection Services team is offering escorts to St. Patrick subway station, the closest subway station to SickKids, and to the Atrium parking garage. The escorts will be available until the evening of Sunday June 27. Please speak with your unit nurse for more information.
Please consider taking your child to a local children's clinic. SickKids' Emergency Department is open for business as usual during G20 weekend. Our Emergency Department is here to serve children whose lives may be in danger. But one of every three children brought to our Emergency doesn't need emergency care. They have ear aches, flu, colds or a bit of fever. Problems like these can be well looked after by a family doctor, paediatrician or staff in a community health centre. Not only will you receive care closer to home, you will avoid the troubles in the downtown core.

Security zone maps and alternate routes if driving in The G20 Integrated Security Unit has a page on its website that includes a map of alternate routes to get around the security zone. To keep traffic flowing as efficiently as possible, a traffic management strategy has been created to guide vehicles away from the security perimeters surrounding the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. It's very detailed and you can find it here.
