Exploring the ethical design of global health study abroad/service learning experiences

Principal Investigator: Dr. Helen Dimaras, Scientist at the Centre for Global Child Health and Child Health Evaluative Sciences, Research Institute at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), Assistant Professor at The Faculty of Medicine and Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto.

Working with international partners, various studies explore the ethical design of study/work abroad placements of students from the global north in settings in the global south. Most research thus far has taken place in the Dominican Republic, where a team of students from the University of Toronto undergraduate course "Global Health Research traveled to the Dominican Republic to explore perceptions of a variety of stakeholders on global health volunteer projects. Four publications ensued and a 2017 research team will be travelling to the Dominican Republic to pursue knowledge translation activities and design next steps together with stakeholders.
