Principal Investigators: Dr. Shaun Morris, Clinician Scientist in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Scientist-Track Investigator, Centre for Global Child Health and Child Health Evaluative Services, Research Institute, The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), Dr. Ian Kitai, Staff Physician, TB Specialist in the Division of Infectious Diseases, The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids).

This project aims to identify the level of understanding that paediatric patients and their caregiver(s) have at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) Tuberculosis (TB) Clinic regarding latent tuberculosis Infection (LTBI) and window prophylaxis, its treatment and side effects. In addition, the relationship between patient and caregiver understanding and various sociodemographic factors will also be explored.

The primary study aims are:
i) To characterize the socio-demographics of paediatric patients and their caregiver(s) seen at the TB Clinic at SickKids
ii) To determine the level of understanding that paediatric patients and their caregiver(s) have with regards to LTBI and window prophylaxis, treatment and potential side effects of treatment
iii) To determine how the level of patient/caregiver understanding changes over the course of treatment
iv) To understand how the sociodemographic characteristics of patients and caregiver(s) are related to their level of understanding

Data will be collected through questionnaires administered to the caregiver(s) of the paediatric patients in each study group.
The project is currently underway embedded within the SickKids Tuberculosis Clinic.

Project collaborators include the Division of Infectious Diseases and the Tuberculosis Clinic at SickKids.

Supported by: partial funding from the Pediatric Consultants Grant for Creative Professional Activities.
