Training Opportunities

The Brill lab is part of Developmental & Stem Cell Biology Program at the Research Institute at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The Research Institute fosters training of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows through the activities of the Research Training Centre (RTC).

Undergraduates in the Department of Molecular Genetics or in the Human Biology Specialist program at the University of Toronto are eligible to apply to the lab as Fourth Year Project students. Previous coursework in genetics, developmental, cell or molecular biology is expected, and previous laboratory research experience is preferred.

Potential summer students may also apply to the lab through the SickKids Summer Research Program (SSuRe). Application forms are available on the SSuRe website starting in December.

Medical students may apply through the Comprehensive Research Experience for Medical Students (CREMS) Distinction in Research Program. Students interested in pursuing an MD or PhD degree are also encouraged to apply through the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto.

Graduate students are accepted either through the Department of Molecular Genetics or through the Institute of Medical Science (IMS) at the University of Toronto. An undergraduate degree in molecular genetics, biochemistry, developmental biology or cell biology and previous experience with fruit flies or other genetic model organisms is preferred but not required. Interested Molecular Genetics applicants should apply to the department, and are encouraged to contact Dr. Julie Brill directly to discuss potential projects. IMS applicants should also contact Dr. Julie Brill directly as should international students inquiring about funding.

Postdoctoral candidates are encouraged to write to Dr. Julie Brill directly to inquire about research opportunities in the lab. Please include a cover letter describing your graduate research, specific research interests and career goals. Please also include the names and contact information of three references. Candidates with a suitable background may be invited for an interview. Postdoctoral fellows are expected to apply for independent funding while in the lab.
