Brief Biography

Michael Casas received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from The University of Western Ontario in 1985. After one-year residency at The Hospital for Sick Children, he undertook studies at the University of Toronto where he received his Diploma in Paediatric Dentistry (1988) and a Master of Science (1991). He joined the staff of The Hospital for Sick Children in 1991 while maintaining a private specialty practice of pediatric dentistry until 2008. Dr. Casas is active in graduate education, research and clinical care at SickKids.

Research Interests

Pediatric Dentistry

Clinical investigations of children with early childhood caries with emphasis on primary tooth endodontic techniques.

Risk Management/Quality Assurance in Dentistry

Investigation and dissemination of clinical and practice guidelines with special emphasis on quality improvement and risk assessment in delivery of dental services. Current investigations include development and validation of systems for prioritization of elective operating room treatment for children with dental caries and alternative management strategies for children with facial cellulitis of dental origin.

Prevention of Orofacial and Dental Trauma

Computer modeling of trauma for improvement of protective devices for sport-specific injuries
