Brief Biography

Mary Douglas graduated in 1986 and began working in the Nephrology, Renal transplant program as a staff nurse until 1996 (where program had expanded to Multi Organ transplant program). Within those 10 years however, she spent one year working in a remote village in Kenya running a clinic. Ms. Douglas also spent three years in a larger Kenyan community teaching in a School of Nursing in a 250 bed community hospital. Her interest in international education for nurses grew and so in 1996 she completed her BScN. She began working as Nurse Educator for Multi Organ Transplant, Neurology, Genetics, Metabolics and Urology in 1996. In 1997 she became educator of Surgical Services, which included General Surgery, ENT, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Trauma Ophthalmology and Urology. In 1999 her focus for Nursing education was switched to Neurosurgery, Trauma and Ophthalmology. In 2002 she completed a Master of Nursing degree from U of T with a subspecialty certificate in Ethnic and Pluralism Studies. One term was spent back teaching in Kenya in order to complete the specialty certificate. Currently, she is the educator for The Neurosciences and Trauma programs.

Clinial Care Activities 

  • Orientation and on going educational needs of the staff of the Neurosciences and Trauma Programs
  • Implementation of the dry chest tube drainage system within Sick Kids
  • Central Education classes involving Neurological Assessment, Care of an EVD, Chest tube care, Neurosurgical care, and other related topics.
  • Implementation of the Stepdown Process for Neurosurgical Patients.
  • Implementation of Grid Surgery patients present on neurosurgical ward

Research Interests

Cross cultural and Trans-cultural education and approaches.
