Brief Biography

Cecilia Hyslop is an advanced nursing practice dducator in the Labatt Family Heart Centre’s Cardiac Critical Care Unit, at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Graduating from the University of Ottawa in 1986, she began her career at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Cecilia moved to Toronto in 1990 to work at SickKids in the Paediatric Critical Care Unit.  She then completed her Master Degree in Education in 1992, and in 1997 became the nurse educator in this critical care unit.

Cecilia has performed a number of leadership opportunities during her career in nursing. Some of these include the roles of paediatric consultant, president elect, president and past president of the Toronto Chapter
of the Canadian Association of Critical Care Nurses during the period of 2001-2006.  From 2006-2010, Cecilia enjoyed the roles of director of awards and sponsorship, vice president and president of the National Board of
Directors of the Canadian Association of Critical Care Nurses.  She has also been a member of and/or chair of a number of critical care conferences on a local and national level.  Cecilia has also been involved in the
development and evaluation of the National Paediatric Critical Care Nurses certification examination CNCCP (C), assessing competency of critical care nurses across Canada, as well as a certification mentor for this
same examination.

Cecilia’s expertise and passion lie in the area of paediatric and cardiac critical care. She also has expertise in the areas of Berlin Heart, Novalung and Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy.  Her role at SickKids has provided her the opportunity to share her experiences with her international colleagues.

Sept 24, 2003: Team Award. Grace Evelyn Simpson Reeves Award for Excellence in Education. Nurse Educator group was awarded this award for excellence. Nominated by our Education Director – Dauna Crooks

May 8, 2001: Individual Award. Grace Evelyn Simpson Reeves Award for Excellence in Education. 39 supporting nominations by interdisciplinary colleagues in the Critical Care Unit for this award.
