Brief Biography

Dr. Holtby is a paediatric anaesthetist who has been on staff at The Hospital for Sick Children since 1986. She is currently Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto. She is the Director of Cardiovascular Anaesthesia at the hospital and has been involved in all aspects of the care of children with congenital heart disease, helping to organize same-day admission to hospital for children undergoing cardiac surgery, with a trial of early extubation of children following repair of congenital heart disease, and with various studies and protocols for postoperative pain management.

Dr. Holtby is also involved in research of neurological injury following cardiac surgery and in a number of other studies with members of the Department of Critical Care, Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery.

Dr. Holtby has arranged and taught an annual series of seminars in cardiac anaesthesia for the Fellows in the Department of Anaesthesia, and has lectured to trainees in Critical Care, Paediatrics, and Anaesthesia on a variety of subjects. She has also lectured to the Society for Cardiovascular Anaesthesia, the Singapore Society of Anaesthetists, and has been visiting professor at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, and the South-East College of Anaesthetists in England.

Dr. Holtby also has an interest in technology as it applies to the practice of anaesthesia and was Equipment Director for the department for several years and remains involved in initiatives for automated record keeping. She remains hopeful that by the end of her career paper charts will be a thing of the past!

Dr. Holtby is also President of the Medical Staff Association at The Hospital for Sick Children and, as such, serves on the Board of Trustees and on a number of other committees.
