Brief Biography

Bob Hilliard is a clinician-educator at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, the first head of a Division of General Paediatrics and now a busy ward chief and outpatient clinician. He also has six and a half years experience in Kenya, Congo and Uganda.

Bob is involved in all aspects of teaching and faculty development. Bob has realized that he can achieve his goal of improving the standard of child health care by helping train outstanding, compassionate and caring paediatricians.
With the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, Bob has been chair of the Paediatric Specialty Committee, examiner in paediatrics for 14 years, and chair (7 years) of the oral exam boards.

Bob has been an active supporter of the Canadian Paediatric Society as a member (10 years) and chair (six years) of the Annual Conference Committee, and member of the Bioethics Committee. He has presented 23 abstracts and one workshop at annual meetings, and was guest editor for one issue and author of one paper for Paediatrics & Child Health.

Bob Hilliard is a general paediatrician and clinician-educator in the Department of Paediatrics. Following a BA at the University of Saskatchewan, Bob completed his MD at the University of Toronto in 1967 and his paediatric training (1970 – 75) at The Hospital for Sick Children and Montreal Children’s Hospital, McGill University. He worked for six and a half years (five of these in church hospitals) in Kenya, Congo, Uganda and Ethiopia as paediatrician and medical educator. Bob later completed an MEd and EdD at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education / University of Toronto.

Bob serves as ward chief on the general paediatric in-patient unit and as consultant pediatrician in the general pediatric clinics. His interests are growth problems in children, developmental and school problems, and children with multiple medical problems and developmental disabilities. With his experience in Africa, Bob has an interest in international child health and immigrant children.

Bob has been active with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as chair of the Paediatric Specialty Committee and examiner in Paediatrics for 15 years having served as chair of the examination board and of the Structured Oral Questions (OSCE) Committee.

Bob has been an active supporter of the Canadian Paediatric Society as a member (10 years) and chair (six years) of the Annual Conference Committee, and member of the Bioethics Committee. He is presently President-Elect of the CPS.
