Brief Biography

Karen Kinnear is Vice-President, Clinical at The Hospital for Sick Children with key operational oversight and accountability for critical care services including the Paediatric ICU, the Neonatal ICU, the Labatt Family Heart Centre, Respiratory Services, Acute Care Transport Services, Ambulatory Programs, Allied Health Patient Care Operations, and Clinical Informatics and Technology. She provides clinical executive leadership to the international patient care revenue streams and the multi-million dollar expenditures related to new Clinical IMT Capital Investments for the hospital.

Karen is a values driven leader with over 15 years of experience providing business and strategic leadership focused on improving the quality of care and health of children and families. Karen has contributed to a variety of pan-provincial committees and task forces. She is co-chair of the Ehlers Danlos Syndrome Expert Panel, member of the Paediatric Council for Maternal and Child Health Benchmarking Steering Committee, and she has contributed to the Neonatal Transfer Guidelines and the strategy on Provincial Heart and Lung Transplant.

Karen is the administrative co-chair of the provincial Paediatric Critical Care Advisory Committee (PCCAC), leading the strategy and implementation of critical care services among the paediatric academic health services centres. She is a recognized leader in paediatric critical care operations with several public speaker engagements at international and national critical care forums. In 2012, Karen joined an expert panel commissioned by the NHS in the UK to advise on the impact to Paediatric ICU on proposed changes to cardiac services.

Karen has been with The Hospital for Sick Children for 26 years, beginning with her career as a staff nurse in the Cancer Centre in 1990. In 2001 she was appointed to a clinical director role, and obtained her MBA in 2004.  She became Executive Director role in 2011 and Vice President Clinical in 2014.
