Brief Biography

Dr. Kraft has been a full-time academic physician at the hospital since 1984. He is cross-appointed to the Department of Ophthalmology at the Toronto Western Hospital in the University Health Network, and is a Consultant Ophthalmologist to the Bloorview Macmillan Rehabilitation Centre. He is on courtesy staff at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital where twice a year he runs clinics and provides surgical care in paediatric ophthalmology. He is an internationally known specialist in problems of eye muscle balance (strabismus), binocular vision, and amblyopia ("lazy eyes") in both children and adults. His expertise has led to his being the only Canadian active member in the Association for Research in Strabismus, also known as the North American Squint Club, a highly select group of strabismus experts who work in this field.

He has helped pioneer studies in telemedicine for strabismus evaluations, which may stimulate increased use of telehealth technology for providing eye muscle consultations to underserviced areas in Ontario. This work grew out of his work at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital.

He has been an invited lecturer throughout the world, including Australia, United Kingdom, Ireland, France, United States, the Middle East, Singapore, India, and South America. He has co-authored over 75 peer-reviewed publications in the literature and 24 book chapters, and he has given over 200 presentations in meetings over the last 22 years. He is one of only 12 active specialists in strabismus in Ontario, and his services have been solicited from all provinces in Canada, especially Manitoba, Quebec and Newfoundland, as well as from countries in the Caribbean, Middle East, and Europe.
