Brief Biography

Dr. Jacob C. Langer’s clinical and research interests include neonatal and fetal surgery, minimally invasive paediatric surgery, and the management of complicated gastrointestinal problems in children. He is considered an international expert on the management of Hirschsprung's disease.  He has written 300 papers and 70 book chapters, and travels extensively internationally to do operations and to lecture on these and other topics.  

He has received numerous honours, including the Innovative Scientist of the Year award from the St. Louis Academy of Science and the prestigious James IV Travelling Fellowship, and was named one of the top 30 doctors in Toronto by Toronto Life Magazine.

Jack was educated and trained at the University of Toronto and The Hospital for Sick Children.  He completed research fellowships at the University of California, San Francisco and McMaster University in Hamilton.

Jack was on staff at McMaster University Medical Centre in Hamilton from 1989 to 1992, and at St. Louis Children's Hospital (Washington University) from 1992 to 1999.  He returned to Canada in 1999 to become Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto and Head of the Division of General and Thoracic Surgery at SickKids, and inaugural holder of the Robert M. Filler Chair in Paediatric Surgery. He held these positions until 2012.

Dr. Langer's Research interests include:

- Neonatal and fetal surgery
- Minimally invasive paediatric surgery
- Management of complicated gastrointestinal problems in children
- Management of congenital lung cysts in fetuses and children
