Brief Biography

Karen Lang completed a general nursing diploma in 1989 and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2002 from Laurentian University. In 2003 she completed a Master of Nursing, Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (Child) at the University of Toronto.

Clinical Activities

Karen has worked internationally caring for children with diverse needs. She has worked at Sick Kids since 1989 where she began her nursing career in the neonatal surgical unit. Karen then transferred to the Paediatric Critical Care Unit where she worked as a staff nurse for 12 years, specializing in the medical surgical critical care. In April 2005 she moved to the general surgical unit where she has been practicing as an Advanced Practice Nurse with the Division of General Surgery.

Karen is a member of the Group for the Improvement of Intestinal Function and Treatment (GIFT), a multidisciplinary program dedicated to the care of children with intestinal failure. Her clinical care activities include comprehensive patient care of infants and children with Short Bowel Syndrome. In addition to direct patient care responsibilities Karen provides education and support to staff nurses and the multidisciplinary team, as well as being a resource to long-term patients and families while in-patients and who have been discharged into the community.

Research Interests

Karen is a member of the College of Nurses of Ontario, Registered Nurses Association of Ontario, The Canadian Nurses Association, Canadian Association of Paediatric Surgical Nurses, and American Pediatric Surgical Nurses Association.
