Brief Biography

Silvana Oppedisano has worked at SickKids since graduating with a nursing degree from Ryerson University in 1987. She obtained her Master of Nursing from the University of Toronto in 2006 and has held a variety of positions in a number of programs at the hospital including the Burn and Plastic Surgery Program and the Pre-Anesthesia Clinic. Currently, she is the Nurse Practitioner in the G-tube Program in the Department of Paediatric Medicine. She provides consultation for both outpatients in clinic as well as for inpatients of all areas of the hospital, assessing patient’s appropriateness, safety and family’s readiness for G-tube feeding tube insertion.  As an expert in this highly specialized area, she is a resource within the hospital and both in the national and international community.

Oppedisano is a member of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario, PedNIG Special Interest Group, the Sigma Theta Lambda Pi honour society and holds a clinical appointment with the University of Toronto. She is a recipient of the Grace Evelyn Nurse Excellence Award in Nursing  Education, the Grace Evelyn Simpson Reeves Award for Excellence in Advanced Practice Nursing, the Ruth Duncan McCamus Award and Daisy Award. She is very involved in quality improvement with a specific focus on optimizing efficiencies, promoting patient safety and patient flow as well as building capacity and independence of staff and patient/family through the development of educational resources about G- tube care. She has a special interest in supporting the decision making capacity of families struggling to make the decision about whether or not to proceed with a G-tube insertion for their child.
