Brief Biography

Hazel is an Advanced Practice Nurse who has spent her career caring for high risk neonates at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. This began prior to her undergraduate degree and she participated in the Summer Time Employment Program (STEP) during her studies. Upon completion of her degree, she began nursing in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit where she has remained. There she developed an interest in caring for infants born with congenital anomalies and her graduate studies focused on the lived experience of expectant parents when a fetal anomaly is detected. Working with the Fetal Alert Network since 2005, Hazel brings a unique perspective to the planning and provision of care to women expecting babies with congenital anomalies in the province of Ontario.

Clinical Activities

Hazel continues to provide comprehensive care to high risk newborns and their families through her advanced nursing practice in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. She also collaborates with external high risk obstetric nurses to assist with transitioning expectant parents into their NICU experience through tours and preparatory consultations.

Research Interests

Hazel is very interested in collaborating with both nurses and physicians around the province in research activities geared towards the prevalence of certain birth defects in Ontario both from an exploration of causes to the outcomes acheived by these children. Her graduate work instilled an innate curiosity regarding the qualitative experience of this patient population; an area she would like to further explore in future research activities.
