He is also a Senior Associate Scientist in the Translational Medicine program at SickKids Research Institute. At the University of Toronto, Silverman is a Professor of Paediatrics & Immunology at the University of Toronto. His appointments are in the Department of Paediatrics, Immunology and the Institute of Medical Sciences. In 2008 Silverman was named the inaugural holder of the Ho Family Chair in Paediatric Autoimmunity at SickKids.

Silverman has received various honours including an Assistantship and an Associateship from the Arthritis Society of Canada. He is currently the only Canadian Advisor to the Arthritis Panel at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. He coordinates the Northern Paediatric Clinic which travels throughout Northern Ontario. Dr. Silverman is an Associate Editor at the Journal of Rheumatology responsible for the paediatric section of the journal. Dr. Silverman has continually held peer reviewed research grants from both the Arthritis Society and Medical Research Council of Canada, now the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

Silverman's major interest is in outcomes in paediatric systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and the etiology of neonatal lupus erythematosus (NLE). He is currently the paediatric investigator on a Canadian-wide study of paediatric and adult onset SLE. He is a member of many national and international organizations for studying paediatric rheumatic diseases including the Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance, the Paediatric Rheumatology Collaborative Study Group, the Paediatric Rheumatology International Trials Organization, the Canadian Network for Improved Outcome in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, the Paediatric Rheumatology Basic Science Research Group, the Lupus section of the American College of Rheumatology and the Canadian Rheumatology Research Consortium. He has sat on multiple national and international review panels and has reviewed for these agencies which include the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Arthritis Society of Canada, the Kidney Foundation of Canada and the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) in the United States.
