Brief Biography

Dr. Elizabeth Stephenson received her MD from Columbia University in New York, and did her medical residency and fellowships at Boston Children’s Hospital in association with Harvard Medical School.

Stephenson came to work at The Hospital for Sick Children in 2003, and continued her education by taking a master’s degree in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Toronto. She currently holds positions in the Cardiology department, with the Research Ethics Board, and at the Research Institute.

Stephenson enjoys singing as a soprano with the Toronto Classical Singers when she is not otherwise occupied with her many activities at SickKids. She also started a family this past year, as she and her husband welcomed their first child in May. Being able to split her time nearly evenly between clinical work and research is one of the main draws for Stephenson at SickKids. She also finds that because of the size of the hospital, she can better focus on her particular interest - electrophysiology – rather than being a more general cardiologist.

Clinical Care Activities

  • Electrophysiology
  • Pacing
  • Epidemiology

  • Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy
  • Implantable Defibrillator Therapy

Research Activities

  • Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy

External Funding

The SAMIS Trial: Multicenter study of antiarrhythmic medications for treatment of infants with supraventricular tachycardia. On our application I was involved in and responsible for several methodological changes as well addressing confounding factors that had led to concern on previous attempts. I am the site PI, and SickKids is the Eastern coordinating centre.
