Brief Biography

Dr. Michelle Shouldice completed a pediatric residency at the Hospital for Sick Children/University of Toronto in 1998, followed by a clinical fellowship in neurodevelopmental pediatrics and child maltreatment. She has worked as a staff pediatrician at the Hospital for Sick Children since 1999 and is currently the Division Head for both Paediatric Medicine and Adolescent Medicine.

Clinical areas of focus include developmental, behavioural and mental health concerns in children and youth who may also have physical health symptoms or disorders, as well as specialized practice in the area of child maltreatment. As a pediatrician and educator, Dr. Shouldice has been instrumental in addressing the broad health concerns of vulnerable children and families, and in developing the field of child maltreatment practice in Canada. She is active in clinical practice providing consultations and medical care for children and youth with neurodevelopmental disorders, including those with possible PANDAS/PANS and additionally those who may have experienced abuse, assault and neglect. Dr. Shouldice is actively engaged in the development and implementation of integrated medical and mental health models of care.

In her role as an educator, she teaches, mentors and develops innovative curricula in these fields of practice. She has led the development of national standards of practice and training for pediatricians who provide specialized child maltreatment assessment, care and expert opinions. As an expert in the assessment of child physical abuse concerns, she has made numerous appearances in both family and criminal court.
