Brief Biography

Tanya Smith is a Clinical Nurse Specialist/Nurse Practitioner with the Suspected Child Abuse & Neglect Program and has been with the program since 1995. Tanya completed her BNSc from Queen’s University in 1993. She completed her Master’s in Nursing at U of T in 1997 and Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (Paediatric) Program at U of T in 1999. Tanya is a certified Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner.

Clinical Care Activities

  • Medical evaluation of children and adolescents were sexual abuse/assault concerns have arisen.
  • Program planning and clinical leadership for the paediatric sexual assault initiative for the Ontario Network of Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Care Centers.
  • Testifies in court and has qualified as an Expert Witness at both the Provincial and Federal court levels on child and adolescent sexual abuse/assault
  • Collaborates closely with community agencies to improve the approach to the evaluation of child abuse in the city of Toronto through the Child Advocacy Center pilot project.

Research Interests

  • Program evaluation for Provincial Paediatric Sexual Assault Programs to determine their effectiveness in the enhancement of services for children and families
  • Evaluation of a Child Advocacy Center in Toronto to improve the approach to the evaluation of sexual assault victims and families
  • Child sexual exploitation and the impact on children, families and system
