Brief Biography

Dr. Furqan Shaikh received his medical degree from Queen’s University in 2003.  He completed his paediatrics residency at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa and a fellowship in Paediatric Haematology/Oncology at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.  Dr. Shaikh is a Paediatric Oncologist in the Solid Tumour Program within the Division of Haematology/Oncology at the Hospital for Sick Children, and an Assistant Professor of Paediatrics at the University of Toronto.  He is a member of the Germ Cell Tumor subcommittee of the Children's Oncology Group.

  • Physician – Solid Tumour Program, Division of Haematology/Oncology.

Research Interests

  • Paediatric Rare Tumors: germ cell tumors, retinoblastoma, liver tumors, infrequent cancers of childhood.
  • Supportive Care: procedures in paediatric oncology, chemotherapy safety, optimal use of electronic health records.
  • Medical Education: research education, continuity clinic programs, e-Learning.

  • 2012-2013 – Academic Half Day Teaching Award, Division of Haematology/Oncology. Awarded to the staff responsible for the year’s best formal teaching session, as judged by the fellow group.
  • 2012 – Best Poster Award, International Society of Pediatric Oncology (SIOP) Annual Congress, London, England.

  • 2010 –Dr. Dominic Pantalony Resident Award, recognizing one “Hematology or Hematopathology subspecialty resident or fellow who has exemplified excellence in the realms of clinical care, research, education and support of fellow trainees,” conferred at the Division of Hematology (Department of Medicine) Annual Research Day.
